CATHOLIC DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAS

Court St. Elizabeth #1486

The Catholic Daughters of the Americas is the largest international Catholic Women’s Organization in the world. Headquarters are in New York City with Courts throughout the Americas.

Court St. Elizabeth was founded in 1948 and currently has 150 active members from as far away as Florida. The organization is a social and fraternal one with a mission to enhance the spiritual and social lives of its members while making significant charitable contributions on the parish, local, state, national and international levels.

Membership is open to all Catholic Women who are at least 18 years old.

Meetings are held the second Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. in Msgr. Mulligan Hall. Attendance is encouraged, but not mandatory. Participation as a member of one of the many Committees is expected of local members.

On the fourth Friday of every month, a group of members visits a local Nursing Home and conducts a Prayer service for residents.

For Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Valentine’s Day, members provide “treats” for local Nursing Home residents.

In December, our Court sponsors a Birthday Party for residents of the Geraldine Thompson Home.

Members make Rosaries to be sent to those who have none (during 1999, more than a thousand were made and sent).

We collect stamps, can tabs, greeting card fronts, pennies (PENNIES FROM HEAVEN JARS in Church vestibules) for assorted charities.

During Lent, the Court sponsors an Evening of Recollection for women of our area.

Two fundraisers are held every year:

In July, a BOARDWALK BOUTIQUE, a fundraising “flea market” held in the Pavilion on the Boardwalk in Avon.

In October, a CARD PARTY/GIFT AUCTION is held in the Avon Municipal Building.

Socially, there is a Pot Luck Dinner in November, a Christmas Party in December, a Covered Dish Supper in March, and refreshments and mingling before each monthly meeting.

Each month, all members receive a Newsletter detailing activities of the local, state, and national membership.

Dues are $15/ year.

BEREAVEMENT COMMITTEE

A member of the committee visits the family of a deceased parishioner and offers the sympathy of the. parish. Help is offered; that is, house-sitting, shopping, preparing and serving food after the interment, etc. Msgr. Mulligan Hall also is made available to accommodate the family after the funeral should such space be needed. Contact person: Beatrice Murday; phone, 988-8218.

FOOD PANTRY

Boxes are kept at Church entrances for parish donations of non-perishable items of food. Emergency requests for food are taken care of immediately. A number of less fortunate parish families are helped monthly. Chairman: Beatrice Murday; phone, 988-8218.

PASTORAL CARE

The Pastoral Care program at our parish includes ministering to the sick, elderly and homebound. Daily visits are made to Parishioners who are hospitalized or living in area nursing care and convalescent centers, as well as the sick cared for at home, whether short- or long-term. The primary purpose of the visit it to bring the Eucharist and arrange for the Sacraments of the Sick and penance when appropriate or desired. Time is spent in conversation, discussing needs, and problem solving when possible, providing information on health agencies, personal care aides, nutrition, etc., or just plain socializing, getting caught up on Parish news. Time is often spent interacting with family members, health aides and eventually in the bereavement process.

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES / FUNDRAISING

This committee is basically responsible for the social aspects of an event. Many times after a religious service, this committee will serve light refreshments, usually in Mulligan Hall, which is below the rectory.

In May, we have our annual cocktail party, “An Evening By The Sea,” which is held at the Belmar Fishing Club.

We usually plan two 50/50’s during the year. These events help pay something toward repairs to our Church.

In August we have our annual Parish dinner/dance which is held at the Barclay in Belmar.

We are always looking for people to help, so we can expand and improve our activities.

ELIZABETH MINISTRY

Following the example of Mary and Elizabeth,
we visit and share the sacredness of all life
.

St. Elizabeth’s has started an exciting new outreach program called ‘ Elizabeth Ministry ’.  By sharing personal stories and similar experiences, women from our church community offer support, encouragement and assistance to families during the joys, trials and sorrows of the childbearing years and beyond.

How can a woman receive reassurance and advice when she is pregnant or caring for her newborn?  With whom can a woman talk about infertility?  Where does a woman turn to for solace once widowed?

This outreach includes pregnancy and pregnancy complications, birth, baptism, miscarriage and infant or child death, a ‘mom and me’ playgroup, and support for parents of teens as well as grandparenting and widow support.

This ministry is based on the Visitation Story of Mary and Elizabeth in Scripture.

If you would like to volunteer or are interested in more information, please contact Pam Carter at 732-774-4089 or pscarter@optonline.net.

CHRISTMAS PAGEANT

The Children's Christmas Nativity Pageant is held each December in the Municipal Building.  We also hold a covered dish supper at the same time.  The gym is beautifully decorated and the evening is enjoyed by all.  The pageant practice begins in November and continues each Sunday afternoon for about an hour until the week before the show.  We hold the show on the second Sunday in December at about 4:00.  Santa also makes a guest appearance.  The pageant is open to all children age 4 and up.  We also welcome all adult volunteers to organize the dinner, costumes, and seating for the supper.  Anyone volunteers interested in participating in the Christmas Nativity Pageant please contact Nora Magrini.
